In the late 70's and early 80's the point was rammed home that God wasn't always a man, now was he? She?

The seminal book, "When God Was A Woman" sparked a series of books that built on that basic thesis. It was a view that needed a hearing although the original author far exceeded her evidence. Despite the anthropological shortcomings of the book, what was evident is that there had been, and still is, a suppression of the 'the female principle' in our spiritual life. The early Church greatly resisted the veneration of The Virgin. The Magdalene has certainly been denigrated.

Judy Chicago once remarked "that if men gave birth, there would be statues exhaulting childbirth in the town squares of every city in the nation."

It is a difficult point to argue with.

It was also an interesting and fruitful venue for a potter.

The above is the matching of a terra-cota pot (with some highly off center throwing) and porcelain hand-built figures.
